Venice Marco Polo Airport is one of Italy’s busiest international gateways, welcoming millions of travellers every year. As one of the country’s most iconic destinations, Venice shapes visitors’ first impressions from the moment they enter the terminal.
For Gruppo SAVE, which operates Venice Marco Polo Airport as well as Treviso and Verona airports, the objective was clear: provide a wayfinding experience that is as intuitive and welcoming as the city itself.
The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics accelerated the project. With international passenger numbers expected to rise significantly across northern Italy, Gruppo SAVE chose to modernise the airport’s navigation experience well before the opening ceremony.
“A smart airport doesn’t just get passengers to their gate. It anticipates their needs, reduces stress, and transforms transit time into a seamless experience.”
A Deployment Built Around the Passenger Journey
ViaDirect installed four Gazelle 43″ interactive kiosks throughout the terminal. Two kiosks serve passengers in the arrivals area, while the other two support travellers in the departures hall.
Each kiosk combines ViaDirect’s interactive 3D map with real-time information feeds. As a result, passengers can access accurate guidance and up-to-date information from a single interface.

The solution supports the entire passenger journey. Travellers can quickly locate check-in counters, boarding gates, security checkpoints, passport control areas, smoking cabins, parking payment stations, restaurants, and retail stores.
Furthermore, the platform manages navigation across both landside and airside zones within a single map experience. This unified approach simplifies complex journeys and reduces passenger stress.
Three Real-Time APIs. One Seamless Interface.
What sets this deployment apart is its extensive real-time data integration. Instead of relying on static information, the kiosks receive live updates through three dedicated API connections.

Flight Information API
Live SOAP-based flight data, searchable by flight number or displayed as a full departure and arrival board.

Accessibility (PMR)
Kiosks are designed for passengers in wheelchairs (WCHR, WCHS, WCHC).

Interactive 3D Map
Full multitouch navigation with zoom, rotation, floor switching, and GPS-style route orientation across all terminal zones.

Usage Analytics
Passenger behaviour and engagement metrics exported via Google Analytics and Google Data Studio, giving the airport team actionable insight.
A Multi-Channel Approach: Kiosk, Mobile, and Web
The project extends beyond physical kiosks.
ViaDirect Mobile gives passengers access to the airport’s interactive 3D map directly from their smartphones. By scanning a QR code, travellers can navigate the terminal before arriving or while moving through the airport.
To maximise adoption, the airport prioritised the mobile solution during the project timeline. This approach allowed teams to install QR codes throughout the terminal before kiosk deployment.
At the same time, ViaDirect Web brings the same mapping experience to the airport’s website through an embedded iframe. Visitors can therefore explore the airport in advance and plan their journey before travelling.
The project team delivered the web solution early, giving airport staff sufficient time to complete the integration before the January 2026 launch.
Hardware Designed for the Terminal Environment
Each kiosk uses ViaDirect’s Gazelle design, a 43″ landscape interactive totem featuring a backlit information indicator. The airport also selected a custom RAL finish that aligns with its visual identity.
The 43″ Samsung Full HD touchscreen operates continuously, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Consequently, passengers can access guidance at any time, regardless of flight schedules.
ViaDirect’s VDBox remote monitoring platform supports daily operations. Airport teams can remotely manage displays, software updates, and network settings without dispatching on-site technicians.
Meanwhile, the airport’s technical team handles routine maintenance, while ViaDirect provides remote supervision and technical support throughout the contract.
The content management system gives airport staff full control over points of interest, promotional content, and passenger messaging. As a result, teams can update information in real time without external assistance.
In addition, ViaDirect processes all support requests within 48 hours, ensuring the platform remains accurate and up to date.
